Course Description:
This course was designed for any bird enthusiast who desires to be a birdwatcher or birder. This course will enable participants to identify a variety of species of birds by ear and sight; and learn about birds’ origin, taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, habitats, ethics and other behaviours. The course also caters for those who wish to learn about the basics of bird identification, improve their existing identification skills for their tour guide business.
Topics:
- The origin of birds and the naming of birds.
- Taxonomy – classification of birds.
- Basic bird anatomy and physiology.
- Bird identification by sight – size, shape, colour and flight (as birding tools).
- Birding by ear – courtship calls, nesting/feeding fledglings, male vs female, alarm calls, hunting.
- Habitat, environments, season and distribution.
- Essentials of bird migration and navigation.
- Types: Birds of the night, waterbirds and shorebirds.
- Birding sites in the 4 quadrants of Tobago.
- Ethics, safety and security while birding.

William Trim
Owner, Nature To and Fro Tours
Mr. William Trim is an experience tour guide and trainer he also the owner of Nature To and Fro Tours. He has been birding and tour guiding since 1985 training over 250 tour guides both locally and regionally including birders, taxi drivers and hikers. He obtained his Master of Science in Forestry from the University of Aberdeen. He was the Head of the Tobago Forestry Division and in 2019 he accompanied the National Geographic travellers’ crew on a tour of Tobago.
