COVID-19 Guidance for
the THTI Community

THTI FAQs
In response to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and government restrictions, the Tobago Hospitality & Tourism Institute would like to advise our students that learning for all theory courses will be online. Whenever the Ministry of Health’s guidelines permit face-to-face classes we continue to make appropriate special arrangements for practical classes to be conducted on campus in line with prescribed Covid-19 protocols. In the meantime, classes for full-time and part-time students are conducted online on Google Classroom.
Classes for full-time and part-time students are being offered via our online Google Classroom platform. All enrolled students are required to access Google Classroom at the commencement of the semester and follow the normal class Class Timetable set for the Semester.
Google classroom will be used as the platform for teaching and learning. Students must follow instructions provided o them via email from THTI and activate their accounts immediately. Additional details are available on the Student Resources
If you intend to pay your outstanding fees, please deposit it to the Tobago Hospitality & Tourism Institute FCB account, if convenient to you. (Account number #2491691). Please check your emails for responses from GATE and please contact Student Services if you have any questions.
We continue to offer several options for short courses through our online learning platform. Some short courses that have practical / hands-on elements will only be scheduled once the Ministry of Health’s guidelines permit face-to-face interactions. Please view the Short Courses page for new courses offerings, you can register and pay directly on our website.
All events and activities that were scheduled to take place have been postponed until further notice. These include Student Dinners, Taste of Tobago Golf Classic
All students are required to active their THTI emails. If you have not activated your THTI Email contact Rodney Stewart at 768-4781 or it.support@thti.edu.tt
If you’re reading this, you should already have information on how to manually search and join a class using a specific course code. Just to recap, your lecturer may give you this code and you then enter it by selecting the (+) tab on the top right of the Google Classroom page. If this seems unfamiliar, please re-visit the “Welcome” Page for detailed instructions.
For students who do not receive a course code, your lecturer may add you to a course; look out for the invite in your email address. In this case, no code is required. You simply have to log-on to Google Classroom, search for your course name and select the ‘Join’ tab which will be displayed.

In addition to completing homework assignments or doing additional reading, students will also be required to join video conferences using Google Meet. This is an online video conference hosted by your lecturer, usually utilised during the regularly scheduled class time.
With an online environment, you are required to take responsibility for your own learning. This means that once content is posted, please review, interact with the material, respond to questions and posts before the start of class. When the lecturer hosts the video conference in Google Meet, you can then use the opportunity to discuss what you have learnt, share opinions on a particular topic and complete any in-class assignments.
You can also use this platform to discuss group projects.
Please view the below video on using the Google Hangout platform for video conferencing. It’s also available as a mobile application!
Any time your lecturer posts material, you automatically get an update in your email. We encourage you to view all course material under the “Classwork” tab. This tab is located at the top of the page (using a laptop) or the bottom of the page (using a mobile application).
If you have a mobile device which has the Google Classroom application installed, you will receive an alert every time new content is posted.
You are encouraged to visit your “Settings” page to select and enable notifications for your course.
For each course, your lecturer will have a “Student Forum” tab located under the “Stream” page. The “Stream” tab is located to the top of the page (laptops) or the bottom of the page (mobile app).
Use this tab to ask questions or share useful information. For example, you may want to ask for help if you’re having difficulty in understanding the guidelines for an assignment. This is a space designed to support you where you can share these types of concerns. Just search for the “Student Forum”, type your feedback in the comment box and reply to post.
Keep in mind that students and the lecturer may be able to assist by responding directly to your query.
Also remember that this is a public post and will be visible to anyone enrolled in the online course. If you have a private concern, please go the “People” tab, search for your lecturer’s name and select the “mail” icon to the right of their name. Here you can send a private question/comment.
We’ve created a Student Forum for this online guide so you can feel free to ask questions about any of the topics we’ve covered here.
Using an online environment will provide many new and exciting options for you to learn and for you to be assessed.
Google Classroom will allow you to do the following:
- Respond to a discussion: here you can respond to a post by entering a reply in the comment box.
- Complete a quiz: submit an online quiz using Google Forms.
- Attach a paper/report: upload a document/PowerPoint by selecting the attachment icon.
- Post media: source and find a YouTube video to upload and share with your lecturer/ class.
- Create media: use your camera phone or webcam and create a recording demonstrating a task.
- Create a voice note: use your phone or laptop to save a recording describing your views on a particular topic.
- Video conferencing: host an online group presentation by sharing your PowerPoint slides with your class via Google Meet
There are many fun options available with online learning and your lecturer will guide you as to the types of activities and assessments required for each course. Remember, if you aren’t clear on how to complete a task, use the Student Forum for that specific course to ask a question.
You can always see when an assignment is due by doing any of the following:
- Using your laptop, visit the ‘Classwork’ tab and you will be able to view a list of upcoming assignments on the left pane.
- Using your laptop or phone, you can select the Google calendar icon which will show you a complete schedule of all work due (in calendar view).
- Using your mobile device, you can select the “to do” tab which will present all assignments in a list format.
For any of the above options, once you select a specific assignment, the description and instructions will be made visible.

Launch of ‘Record’ Feature For Video Sessions
March 24, 2020
The THTI IT department has enabled the ‘record’ feature for Google Hangouts which means that Teachers can record all of their live video content for teaching sessions. This will allow teachers to save the recording for a specific session, attach and then upload it under the respective topic under the “Classwork” tab in Google Classroom. Students can then review the presented material at their convenience. This is especially useful to accommodate students who may not be able to log-on to a real-time session. Instructions on how to use video recording has been emailed to all Faculty.
